Summer Snippets: Option B and Rethinking Possible

Summer Snippets: Option B and Rethinking Possible

This week I was honored to have an article published on the website, Option B. As you may know, Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO and author of Lean In, wrote Option B after the tragic death of her husband. I am grateful that she’s created a forum where others can share their stories of resilience and connect with others. My contribution features my beloved Pathfinders for Autism, one of my passions. I hope you’ll take a peek here and comment, share, post, and all those things you know I love for you to do!

So what inspired me this week?

“We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface, but connected in the deep.” –William James

Why did this quote inspire me?

Even though I marvel at Sandberg’s fortitude and commend her for sharing her story, I personally can’t fathom writing a book so soon after such a tragic loss. It took me twenty years to write mine. And even now, grief, that “strange companion,” still taps me hard on the shoulder every once in a while and spins me right back through its cycles, which I believe can last a lifetime.

Then I remind myself of my own words! “Grief is as unique as our fingerprints.”

So we are different, very different, in how we handle our grief. But, as William James reminded me, we are connected, too. Both Sandberg and I are determined to live fully in the life we did not plan.

How about you? Have you experienced loss in a different way than others? Tell me about it. I’d love to know.

My best – always,

Becky  (Nana B)

P.S. Today at 4 p.m. I’ll be joining the Flourishing 50s membership community for a webinar on “Overcoming Obstacles.” And on August 10th, 7 p.m., I’ll be at The Ivy Bookshop for my first reading (yikes!) and then signing! Hope you can join me! (Facebook invite and RSVP here.)
