About this conversation

An unexpected path into writing

My writing career began with a family moment: playing soccer with my son from my wheelchair. That story appeared in The Baltimore Sun in 2000. In this visit with Barbara, Morning Fuel brings us back to the belief that continues to guide my work: life can still be good.

Five ideas to carry with you

  1. Notice the stories close to home

An everyday moment with my son became my first published column.

  2. Allow a new path to unfold

That first story opened the way to my From Where I Sit newspaper column.

  3. Write about what life teaches

Love, loss, and healing remain at the heart of my writing.

  4. Make room for daily inspiration

Morning Fuel offers reflections to stretch the mind before the day begins.

  5. Keep goodness in view

My work carries the belief that a good life remains possible through difficult circumstances.
