Although it’s been a week filled with more than one inspiring moment, this sentence grabbed me by the heart and has not let go. During the Tony Awards, Ari’el Stachel from the musical, The Band’s Visit, directed his closing remark to “any kid that was watching,” and said:
“. . . know that your biggest obstacle may turn into your purpose.”
Wow. I hit the pause button on my DVR and rewound it three times.
What a bold way to look at adversity!
So many of the obstacles we face feel like anything but our purpose. From annoying to unjust to unexplainable, life’s challenges are often the enemy, to be dealt with and destroyed so we can get on with the life we want, the one we’ve planned.
And even when we fail in that effort, we may find peace once we accept the reality. We may even make the best of the situation and strive to live fully despite the unwanted circumstances.
But what if we looked at the obstacle as a discovery zone for our purpose?
To be honest, I’m not sure I’m that highly evolved yet. To think my purpose could come from my paralysis or my daughter’s autism or my brother’s young death is a stretch for me.
But Stachel’s comment still lingers.
And inspires.
