Staying Positive in Negative Times

Staying Positive in Negative Times

This week’s inspiration is short and to the point. Sometimes I need a singular thought to pierce through the hubbub, especially when life gets messy, chaotic, or uncertain. I need one clear, uplifting thought. This week it came from Martin Luther.

“Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.”

Yes!

Although I know so much of our mental outlook is based on how we respond to life’s inevitable stress (turning our dis-stress to eu-stress as described last week), sometimes I think we need to do more than prepare.

We need to act.

This feeling reminds me of one of my favorite resilient-building words: despite. We need to act in a positive way—despite the circumstances.

Despite the dark news, the negative tones, the fragileness of life, I can still take a positive action. My “apple tree” can be simple—a kind word, a thoughtful deed, an unexpected hug or kiss of love. I will use the best of my humanity to rise above the worst.

I will—because I can.

This week marks the anniversary of the death of my Aunt Pearl, one who exemplified “living life—despite.” She sparkled, inside and out, living life large, on purpose, and always bejeweled.

She and her sister, Faye (my mother), were two of the strongest women I’ve ever known.

They lost their father at a young age, spent their childhood in an orphanage, and each lost a child. Yet, they both delighted in life, planting love and laughter wherever they went.

I miss them so!

Despite my loss, I work hard to keep their spirits alive and with me. My memories of their zeal for living are great companions, inspiring me when life gets dark and lonely.

They showed me how to bloomsparkle, and live despite!

And I am grateful.

How about you? How will you “plant an apple tree” this week? Do you have someone you admire who lives “life despite?” Tell me about it. I’d love to know.

My best – always,

Becky  (Neehah! Note the new name!)
