Permission to Dream and WOOP

Permission to Dream

This week’s inspiration comes from my friend, author, and leadership coach extraordinaire Mary Ann “Skipper” Singer. In her Leadership Tip this month, Skipper shares a strategy for bringing our dreams to life. Here’s what she learned:

The WOOP strategy, developed by NYU psychology professor, Gabrielle Oettingen, helps you set goals and identify and overcome possible roadblocks.

Steps:

  1. Wish
Identify a wish that although challenging, can be fulfilled.
  2. Outcome
Define the best outcome. How will you feel after achieving the desired result?
  3. Obstacles
Identify what might get in the way of fulfilling your wish. It could be a bad habit, irrational belief or an emotion.
  4. Plan
Generate a plan. Develop one effective action you can take or thought you can implement to overcome your obstacle. Use if-then thinking. Ex: If this happens, then I will do this.

WOOPing it up throughout the year will help you accomplish wishes and goals that you can celebrate all year long, not just at the holidays!

Thanks, Skipper! Love this new way of thinking about our dreams, identifying both the outcomes AND the obstacles. And of course I LOVE plans, especially the if-then strategy. I usually carry at least one Plan B with me at all times.

How about you? Are you planning to WOOP it up this year? Tell me about it. I’d love to know.

Oh, and Skipper’s 4-Week Resilience webinar series is coming up. The last day to register is Friday January 13th. I’ll be joining her the last week. Click here to learn more and sign up.

My best–always,
