Nature’s Lesson on Letting Go of “Why”

Nature’s Lesson on Letting Go of “Why”

This week’s inspiration comes from my yard. The photo above is of a mum that has never ever been this gorgeous.

And I don’t know why.

For the last two years, the deer have treated it like a main course meal. Every single flower was nipped, resulting in one giant shrub of unattractive stubs.

I have no idea why the deer didn’t indulge this year. They certainly made their presence known a few months ago when they devoured every morsel of my hydrangeas. And last winter, they practically invaded my home, plucking pansies out of the planters on either side of my garage door. They ate the flowers, tossed the root pods in the middle of the driveway, and gave me a dozen dirt bombs to dodge every time I took the dog out.

Ugh!

This year they must have taken their appetite elsewhere.

The blooms are particularly spectacular. Granted, the size alone is impressive. It’s hard to believe this giant mum grew from a ten-inch pot I received as a gift many years ago. Although I made sure the soil bed was weeded and fertilized, I’m not sure why it grew so large.

As I studied its beauty, I decided to let go of the “whys,” embrace what was before me, and let the awe of it all inspire me.

Nature has a powerful way of reminding us of unseen forces at work.

So much of life we don’t understand. Outside forces nip us, ripping away the blooms we have worked so hard to cultivate. We’re not sure how we will survive.

The resilience of nature reminds us to trust. The sun rises. Darkness comes. The seasons change. Life goes on whether we fully understand it or not.

We can let the awe of it all inspire us. Restore us. Comfort us.

Perhaps our best mode of living is to trust that blooms are ahead—no matter what—and let the unseen forces do their work while we do ours.

How about you? Have you experienced the awe of unseen forces at work? Tell me about it. I’d love to know.

My best – always,
